Why Is He Important?
Christopher Columbus was an important explorer because he was the first to discover the New World (America). He crossed the Atlantic Ocean in search of new lands, which was an incredibly brave and daring expedition. Also, he helped gained economic growth for Spain by traveling to distant lands to trade goods.
The "discovery" of the New World by Christopher Columbus changed the history of the world completely. Columbus himself was important because he was the first European to reach the New World which led to major colonization. So it was not the "discovery" that mattered, but more the effects after the discovery --colonization in the New World.
Columbus' "discovery" allowed the period of colonization to begin. This had a number of important effects. As Americans, the eventual creation of the US is probably the most important of these effects. By "finding" the New World, Columbus started its European colonization. This eventually ended up allowing the US to be created. The creation of the US helped, among other things, to move much of the world towards democracy. It also led to the development of what is now the world's only superpower.
