Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus, was born in Genoa in about 1451. He was the son of a wool merchant and when he was still a teenager, he got a job on a merchant ship. He remained at sea until 1470, when French privateers attacked his ship as it sailed north along the Portuguese coast.
The boat sank, but the young Columbus floated to shore on a scrap of wood and made his way to Lisbon, where he studied mathematics, astronomy, cartography and navigation. This is where he also began to hatch the plan that would change the world forever.
Christopher Columbus was the one who "discovered" the Americas. He made four trips to the Americas and traded with other countries and colonized the country as well.
In 1479 or 1480, his son Diego Columbus was born. Between 1482 and 1485, Columbus traded along the coasts of West Africa, reaching the Portuguese trading post of Elmina at the Guinea coast. It is thought that Columbus may have simply left his first wife, Felipa. In either case, Columbus found a mistress in Spain in 1487. She was a 20-year-old orphan named Beatriz Enríquez de Arana.
Other Names people call him:
Italian: Christoforo Colombo
Catalan: Cristòfor Colom
Spanish: Cristóbal Colón
Portuguese: Cristóvão Colombo
Latin: Christophorus Columbus
Genoese: Christoffa Corombo
